EMAE 290:

Computer-aided Manufacturing

As a Junior, I selected EMAE 290: Computer-aided Manufacturing as one of my technical electives. This course built on the SolidWorks skills taught in EMAE 160 and additionally introduced additional skills in Mastercam for designing and creating parts using a CNC. Within this course, there were four machining projects that tested the skills we were learning and at the end of the course, our final was the CSWP, a more advanced certificate exam awarded by Dassault Systèmes for SolidWorks.

Maze Project

Our first project of the semester was to create a 2D design to make on using Mastercam on the CNC Mill. For my maze I decided to make it for my dad and I put his company logo on it. After running the CNC portion we assembled the mazes in a press with pins.

Dart Project

In our second project we used SolidWorks to design a profile for a dart and Mastercam to create the CAM for a CNC lathe.

Dart Box Project

For our third project, we designed boxes to house our darts and made them on the ShopBot. I decided to make a prototype one out of plywood and a final one out of mahogany as I already had lots of experience with the ShopBot from working at think[box]. I also decided to laser engrave the top for fun.

Chocolate Project

For our final project of the semester, we designed chocolate molds. We created a design in SolidWorks that we could use then use the CNC Mill to cut out. Once we had our positive molds we used a vacuum former to create plastic negatives of the mold. Finally, we poured in melted chocolate to get our final candies.
